The Glory of Letters

The Glory of Letters By Bibhuprasad Mohapatra

"I like writing letters and receiving letters. It's a shame that we've lost the art of letter-writing and saving correspondence. I mourn that."-Elizabeth Lee McGovern (born 1961), an American Musician.
The great soul Gandhiji (1869-1948) also considered ‘letter wriring’ as a divine art. Gwalior born Hindi poet Girija Kumar Mathur (1919-1994), who got the prestigious Kendra sahitya academy award for poetry ‘Main Vaqt Ke Hun Samne’, once wrote:

पत्र घर पर एक निजी अखबार की तरह है

कुंवारा का समर्थन

यह खुशी की निशानी है

प्यार और दोस्ती

In English, “Letter is like a personal newspaper at home
Support of the loner
It’s a sign of happiness
Love and friendship.”
The advent of new technologies such as the internet and other networks have changed the amazing world of Global Communications. No one can deny that it’s the era of email, SMS (Short Message Services) and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service). Still the world of letters is unique.
“Kaschit Kanta Biraha Guruna SwadhikaratPpramattah”
Yaksha, a hindu demi-god and an attendant of Kubera, the lord of wealth, convinces a passing cloud to take a message to his wife at Alaka on Mount Kailasa in the Himālaya mountains. In 5th century AD, the court poet of king Vikramaditya (Gupta Dynasty), the greatest Sanskrit poet and dramatist Kalidasa illustrated the same by his lyric poem “Meghaduta”, which almost consists 111 stanzas & divided into 2 parts i.e. Purvamegh and Uttaramegh. Nobel laureate (Literature, 1907) Rudyard Kipling’s (1865-1936) poetry “The Overland Mail”, Nobel laureate (Literature, 1913) Rabindranath Tagore’s (1861-1941) play “The Post Office”, Indian writer Mulk Raj Anand’s (1905-2004) book “Story of the Indian Post Office”, American singer and actor Elvis Presley’s (1935-1977) song “Return to Sender” have also illustrated the glory of letters.
These random and sudden thoughts are coming to us on “World Post Day”.
